Smoky eyes are just what their description suggests, smoke in the air. The fundamental base of smoky eyes is simple: Create an illusion of darkness around the eye to achieve a rounded eye, perfect and feminine. This appearance works with all shapes of eye. What it does is contours to create the desired look, one of sensual eyes. Wide eyes are attractive and provocative. Once you learn to apply makeup to them, then use dark, matte textured eyeshadows in violet, marine blue, green or brown to imbed your personality into your finished smoky eyes.

How to apply the makeup for Smoky Eyes
1. Prepare the eye area with concealer and moisturizer.
2. Apply loose powder under the eye. This will help control the makeup that will fall during application. The loose powder can be brushed away after your done with eye makeup.
3. Using black eyeliner, line the upper and lower eyes on the interior part of lashline. Always begin on the inside of the eye, finishing on the outside. Use the sponge tool to softly blend in the line towards the eyelashes. This will make the lashes look thicker and will soften the line. Blend in lines with upward circular motions to create the look of smoke rising. Remember: What we're trying to achieve here is that the color gradually fades.
4. The next step is to apply a black or grey eyeshadow. The powder functions well for blending. Use the eye makeup brush to apply the shade starting on the inside of the eye working towards the outside of the eye. Continue applying the color forming a sideways “V” following the contours of the browbone. Extend the line of shadow, stopping in the middle, right above the iris. Use a small amount of eyeshadow here. We want to create smoke, not tar!
5. Apply the color to the area under the eye as well. The color should be more concentrated as you move outward. Merge the top and bottom lines to create softer shading.
6. The next step is fundament. Fuse the color with circular motions-up and out. This will create the illusion of smoky eyes.
7. You can then apply the ivory or beige color with a natural brush. This type of brush is perfect for illumination or applying shading. Blend in the color under the browbone and on the inside of the eye. These areas will stand out.
8. Curl eyelashes.
9. Remove the rest of the translucent loose powder.
10. Apply black mascara on upper and lower eyelashes.
The Smoky Eye Effect
The smoky eye is a smart way of contouring the eyes. By increasing the intensity of the lines and the shading you make your eyes look more dramatic and attractive. Add some artificial eyelashes if you want to achieve a primitively sensual look. While this type of makeup isn't the best option for a parent-teacher conference, your first job interview, and much less for the opening day of the minor leagues. It is an excellent choice for a cocktail, an evening wedding reception, or some kind of nocturnal event. The smoky eye look complements all colors in fashion. You can wear black, red, or white; wear plain fabrics, prints or stripes. This makeup stands alone and will compete with your wardrobe. This is the reason why it is an icon that has made history in eye makeup.
