Smoky Eye Makeup
I think one of the most liked and widely appreciated makeup looks is smoky eye makeup. Why? There is no simpler look that is as seductive and alluring and adaptable as a smoky eye.
Smoky eyes can be done on almost all eye shapes; you just need to be careful doing this on small eyes so that they do not look smaller than they already are.
Basic Smoky Eye
A basic smoky eye is done with simply two colours – a light shade and a dark one. The light shade goes on the brow bone and the dark shade on the entire mobile eyelid. The key is in the blending.
Firstly, sweep the light eye shadow on the brow bone and just under the eyebrow, blending downwards until the crease. This colour should be similar to your flesh tone with very little shimmer.
Next, apply the dark shade on the mobile eyelid from the crease to the lash line. Pat the colour on with a stiff brush to increase colour intensity.
Next get a fluffy brush with a bit of stiffness to blend the two colours. The trick is to blend the darker shade out and up into the lighter shade and not vice versa. This intensifies the look by adding some drama to the eyes.
Add lots of black eyeliner to the inner and outer top lashes and inner and outer bottom lashes too.
Take the point of the stiff eye shadow brush and dip it in the dark shadow. Smudge it with the eyeliner on the lower lash line, blending down slightly.
Clean up any fallout of the dark eye shadow (it happens often enough) from the under eye area with a cotton bud dipped in makeup remover.
Adding a Third (and Fourth!) Colour
Once you have the basic smoky eye down, you can add more dimension to it with the following steps.
A third eye shadow, which should be the darkest of the three or most likely black, should be applied liberally to the outer third corner of the eye.
Blend it well into the surrounding colours.
Take the third colour and draw the shadow into the crease. Blend it out well. Redo this step if you want to increase the intensity of the black.
The fourth colour should be a shimmery light colour like white, pale gold or silver, depending on the look. With a small eye shadow brush, touch this colour to the inner lachrymal area and under the arch of the brow.
A Touch of Pizzazz
You can stop right here and have a splendidly eye catching look, but then again… why should you? Add pizzazz with any step below.
Add a shimmery contrasting shade to the centre of the mobile eyelid.
Amp up the colour. Basic black is good but green, bronze, gold, blue and purple take the smoky eye to another level. Use these over a basic black smoky eye and see the difference.
Add a touch of vaseline or clear gloss over a basic smoky eye for a different look.
