Professional Makeup Tables
Many tools help the makeup artist complete a job well. In studios and on location at sets, it is important for the artist to have a makeup table to work from.
The makeup table assists with the setting up and display of products. This way the artists can easily reach for them without bending over constantly. At the station, he/she can also arrange the products in sequential order so that it is easy to move according to the order of the steps.
Makeup tables, especially those on set, are made of metal and can be rolled around from site to site easily on their four wheels. It looks like a vanity table but much more compact and, of course, is portable. The table top is flat to accommodate the storage of products. The large mirror is perpendicular to table and is surrounded by small fluorescent lights. The better the lighting environment, the better the makeup artist can work so that is quite a feature. Sometimes the mirror has a magnifying view so that the artist can correct the smallest imperfections for an overall polished look. At the extreme ends of the table are cup holder shaped inserts for placing brushes and other tools. Extra storage room can be found under the table as well as drawers can be located there. There are even some models that have opening table tops so that you can access the drawers that way instead of the traditional pull out method.
In studio, the table top should be wide enough to house all of the artist’s utensils as well as the kit, but not so wide that the client is too far away from the mirror. It is a good practice to clean the table top before and after usage with alcohol so that there is no issue of contaminantion. A formica table top very easily facilitates this. The mirrors should still be surrounded by lights. An innovation is to have different touch control light settings so that you can easily meet the client’s need – whether it is for day or evening functions.
The best accessory to a professional makeup table is a high comfortable stool. It does not necessarily have to have a headrest but it should have a cushiony seat and back support as the client would be in the chair for some time. If the seat’s height is adjustable that would be great as well so that you can tailor the height according to the client’s own stature.
