How to Apply Eye Makeup

Do you look at magazines and wish upon stars that your eye makeup could look just as good? Your wish is my command! Eye makeup is easy to apply as long as you keep in mind a few rules. Other than that, treat makeup application as the art it is and let your creativity loose.

One Colour

  • Brush a light colour with a fluffy brush onto the entire eyelid, both mobile and fixed. This eye shadow can be perfectly matte or slightly pearlescent.
  • Apply more of the same colour and concentrate on highlighting the brow bone and the lachrymal area to add brightness to the look.
  • Two Colours

  • Apply a light shade to the brow bone. Concentrate on highlighting the arch of the brow and blend outwards and downwards.
  • Pat a medium or dark shade to the mobile eyelid and then blend upwards into the lighter eye colour.
  • If you like, you can smudge a little of the second colour just on the outer third of the outer lower lash line.
  • Three and More Colours

  • Use a matte or semi matte light shade under the eyebrow. Blend carefully.
  • Apply a medium shade to the mobile eyelid and blend well with the lighter shade.
  • Use a dark shade just on the outer corner of and blend into the medium shade.
  • With a crease brush, take the same dark tone and apply to the crease of the eye to add dimension. Sweep it back and forth with a windshield type motion to blend it well.
  • With a shimmery colour add points of light to your eye makeup look: right under the arch of the brow and the inner tear duct.
  • Eyeliner

Basic black is the go to colour for eyeliner but there are many others to choose from too like brown, flesh, white, jewel tones and even metallics. Choose a new shade when you feel you get stuck in a rut with one colour.

  • Apply at first a thin line of eyeliner from inner lachrymal to outer edge.
  • Make the line a little thicker by applying some more from the middle of the existing line to the outer end.
  • Make the line at the outer edge the thickest. This gives the appearance of longer, bigger eyes and fuller lashes.
  • Line the waterline with a creamy almost waterproof eyeliner pencil. Ensure that the line is connected to the one on the upper lashes at both ends.
  • Smudge the eyeliner on the outer third of the outer lower lash line and blend upwards.
  • Mascara

This is the perfect way to open up your eyes with only a little effort.

  • Apply mascara in your particular formula from roots to tips.
  • Apply coats alternatively between eyes so that each coat has time to dry.
  • Follow your natural lash pattern. All your lashes form a perfect fan to frame the eyes and this is what you should emphasise.
  • Apply to both bottom and top lashes.
  • False eyelashes

To add a little oomph to your look, false lashes are the way to go.

  • Measure the lashes against your eyes and cut off any excess.
  • Apply a thin strip of eyelash adhesive to the band of the strip.
  • Wait for 30 – 60 seconds for the glue to become tacky. In the meantime, flex the strip so that it becomes more pliable.
  • Adhere the lashes as close as possible to your natural lash line (and not on the lid). You can use your fingers, tweezers or eyelash applicator to press the strip securely into place.
  • The best eye makeup guide is right at your fingertips. Remember to practise so in no time your eye makeup would look perfect.
