How to Apply Geisha Makeup
A geisha can be described as a Japanese hostess that is trained to entertain men in conversation, with dance and with song. A geishas appearance is quite unique and unmistakable. The life of a geisha has been a source of great interest in countries outside of its place of origin and as well as the traditions and customs associated with the young women dedicated to this lifestyle.
To apply geisha makeup takes definite skill, patience and knowledge. The aim of the look is for certain features to stand out, like the small heart shaped lips and perfect skin. Such a look is very eye catching and would make quite a statement on stage or a costume party.
Application
The skin must be perfectly primed with wax. Warm a little at a time in your hands and apply to the face and neck in downward strokes. This coating ensures that the skin is smooth and even.
Use a wide foundation brush to apply white face paint onto the neck and face. You will want to work this with downward motions and smooth out the lines with a large round sponge. This gives it a smooth powder like finish. Traditionally, the paint is applied down the back as well. If you want to go this route, use a hand held mirror to see behind you or get someone to help.
Apply the paint all over the face including over the eyelids and right up under the eyes. Apply carefully around this area.
Cover the lips and eyebrows with the paint.
Buff out periodically with the sponge.
Feel free to set the look with white or translucent powder.
Use a hard black eye pencil to draw in the eyebrows. The shape should be thin and straight.
Use a matte red eyeshadow on the outer corners of the eyes in a dot shape. Blend from this intense red dot inward over the mobile lid.
Blend inward on the lower lash line as well.
Black liquid eyeliner is to be applied in a thick even line close to the upper lashes.
Brush the red eyeshadow onto the eyebrows with a mascara wand. Blend from the middle of the brows to the ends.
With a thin liner brush, use a bright red lipstick to outline a heart shaped mouth. Exaggerate the cupids bow shape so that the upper lip looks like the top half of a heart shape. This line must be made far inside the natural lines of the mouth. Fill in the red lipstick with a lip brush.
Line and fill in the bottom lip as usual but ensure that it is proportional to the upper lip.
For a finishing touch, add a light dusting of pure red or bright pink blush to the cheeks and blend upwards to the temples and inwards towards the eyes.
Feel free to experiment and modernise the traditional look by using red, black and white eyeshadow on the eyes.
