How to Apply Eyeliner

Using eyeliner in the correct way can make any eye appear lifted, brighter and alluring. Almost everybody uses eyeliner in some form or fashion but there are still many women who use it to their detriment.

Fast facts

• Rimming all around your eyes with kohl or kajal only makes small eyes look smaller.

• Avoid using liquid eyeliner on lower lashes.

• Almost everybody has trouble with applying eyeliner at first. It requires only a little practice to get comfortable with it and even then mistakes are sometimes inevitable.

Eyeliner Textures

I have found that using cream eyeliner works best for my upper lash line and a soft pencil for my lower lash line and water line. By no means am I being prescriptive; you should experiment to see what works best for you. I can only outline the pros and cons of each formula.

- Cream/gel liner

• Due to its creamy consistency, this makes drawing lines on your lash lines quick and easy. A little goes a long way too. It also serves double duty as a base for the application of your eyeshadows. Be careful: if you make a mistake, it is a little difficult to remove without smudging the rest of the eye makeup.

- Powder eyeliner

• You can wet the eyeliner or stiff angled brush with water, fixing spray or mixing medium and dip into the powder. This would turn into a fast drying, almost liquid consistency. You may have to dab a few times to get a solid line.

- Pencil eyeliner

• These can be hard or soft pencils. Ideally, it should fall somewhere in between: not too hard to drag the skin and not too soft so that the point breaks easily.

How to apply

- You can use a small stiff angled brush or an eyeliner brush to draw a nice even line. Start from the inner corner and work outwards towards the outer corner of the eye.

- Reapply, starting from the middle of the eye this time.

- Do a third application, this time focusing on the outer corner. When you’re finished you should have a smooth line that gradually thickens towards the outer edge of the eye.

- If you are using pencil eyeliner, it may be easily to apply short dabs of product instead of trying to draw a continuous line; this way you would have more control over the product application.

- After this, you can smoothen the line using the angled brush.

Adding colour

You can add some interest to your eyes with coloured eyeliner. Apply your black or dark brown eyeliner as usual. Then dab coloured pencil eyeliner over it. Smudge both colours outwards along the lash line to create a popping smoky lash line effect.

Pale eyeliner

A good way to perk up sleepy eyes and make your whole face appear fresher is to put some flesh coloured, beige or vanilla eyeliner on your waterline. Unless your complexion is porcelain, stay away from white eyeliner. It is such a stark contrast that is distracting instead of appealing.
