How to Apply Dark Eye Makeup

Nothing screams sultriness more than dark eye makeup. It adds a little mystery to the eyes that would have men come a-begging. Applying dark eye makeup is not a difficult task but it is easy enough to go wrong. You have to be very careful so that the look appears effortless and sophisticated.

Dark eye makeup is used in the forms of eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara. Eye colours can be the trickiest to get right.

Technique 1

• Prime your eyelids so that the colours you apply won’t crease or fade during the day.

• On your mobile eyelid apply a dark colour with a creamy texture. This is a good base for the eyeshadow as it gives it a foundation to stick to and avoid accidents.

• Blend out well with your fingers or a stiff synthetic brush.

• Pat on the dark eyeshadow with a stiff eyeshadow brush. Start with only a little and intensify the look gradually. It is best to work slowly to prevent fallout and applying too much makeup. Dark eyeshadow can be used in black or deep tones of grey or navy blue.

• Blend out the edges with a fluffy blending brush. Blend towards the direction of the temple and crease.

• You can leave the area under the brow free of colour or enhance the darkness of the eyes by using a light tone. Apply some concealer under the brows and blend downwards into the dark colour.

• Use a highlight flesh tone and blend under the brow and into the crease.

• Reuse the blending brush to blend. Do not add any more of the dark colour to the brush. Just use what is left on the brush so that there is a smooth gradient.

• Line eyes with black eyeliner and add two coats of mascara to your lashes.

Another way to use dark eye makeup is to apply two complimentary dark shades and one light shade to define the eyes.

Technique 2

• Prime your eyes as usual.

• Apply the light shade first under your brows and then blend downwards towards the crease.

• Apply a lot of dark blue or grey shade to the mobile eyelid and blend well with the light colour.

• Using a crease brush, apply black to the crease only and blend well with the two previous colours.

• Smudge the black eyeshadow along your lower lash line.

• Line eyes with black eyeliner and put two coats of mascara on lashes to intensify the look.

Keep in mind that using dark shadows can get very messy and fall onto other parts of the face like your upper cheekbones. If you work slowly and intensify the colour bit by bit, you can avoid having to clean the fallout from under your eyes. Another way is to apply your eye colours first, wipe away any fallout with a cleansing cloth and then put on the makeup on the rest of your face.
