How to Apply Blush

Did you ever think about why you are drawn to fruits that have a ripe rosy flush? Could it be that their rosy quality is an indication of the juiciness that beckons from beneath its skin? For those of us that are hesitant about blush application, it helps to relate it to fresh, just ripened fruits. For daily wear, it should not be overpowering or stark but just enough to add a fresh and youthful glow to the face.

I used to admire blush on those with fairer skins and was, up to a certain age, convinced that it added precious little to the darker tones among us. Today, I stand converted because I know that blushing is a natural reaction and as such is integral to natural and even dramatic makeup looks.

Blush does a few things for your overall complexion. It gives you a natural healthy glow and even makes you appear more youthful. You can use the darkest colours to contour your face and have it appear slimmer and more defined. You can use flesh or rosy colours to enhance your cheek colour. And you can use the lightest shimmery colours to add lift and light to your face. Imagine! Just a little blush can do all that.

Blushes come in various forms. The most widespread is the pressed powder formula but there are mineral, mousse, cream and gel forms to choose from as well. They can also be matte and slightly shimmery.

You need to simply decide what texture and finish you want. The only thing to be mindful of is that light coloured powder blushes can look ashy on darker skin tones. In which case, you might want to opt for a soft textured blush. The flush you get from a cream formula is quite natural and flattering.

How to apply soft blushes?

Soft textured blushes should be applied after foundation (unless it is a powder foundation) and before your finishing powder. They can also serve to strengthen the colour intensity and longevity of powder blushes which can then be applied after foundation.

- Use your fingertips or a sponge to dab lightly to the apples of the cheeks.

- Blend outwards towards to the temples so that the colour is a gentle wash on the sides of the face as well.

How to apply pressed blushes?

- Use a natural bristle blush brush and dip into the blush.

- Tap off the excess.

- Lightly apply from the temple and sweep down to the apples of the cheeks.

- Blend well.

Where to apply?

This is where it takes a little bit of practice to get the technique right.

The highlight colour should be dusted lightly on the top of the cheekbone. A fan brush is perfect to apply a hint of shimmer here.

To put the cheek colour in the right place, just smile! Apply to the apples of your cheeks and blend backwards towards your temple.

To slim the face and define those wonderful cheekbones, you would need to apply a contour colour. This is done in the hollow part of cheek right under the cheekbones. Can’t find it? Suck in your cheeks like a fish and apply under your cheekbone. After you place the contour, blend the colour downwards.

Don’t forget to blend, blend and blend some more. When you apply your blush it should be a seamless wash of colour to enhance your natural beauty.
