EI Makeup School

Elegance International, or EI Makeup School as it is more commonly called, is a prestigious makeup school that operates out of California, United States. It was started in 1966 by a group of makeup professionals that saw the need for a standardised educational environment for teaching makeup skills that contrasted to the apprenticeship practice at the time. It was the first of its kind and still continues today with new and relevant courses of study for those interested in the field of makeup artistry.

The school is accredited in the United States by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology and does accept non immigrant international students. All admissions must first pass the colour blind test. If a person fails this test, he/she is unable to attend the institute. The faculty boasts of specialised professional makeup artists and guest lectures by the best in the business. They even offer financial aid for those who are in need of it, as courses and other associated fees can range from just over US $7,000 to $14,600.

The courses of study available at EI are as follows:

Studio Makeup Artist Programme

This four month study course offers the student for entry into beauty makeup industries such as cosmetic companies, spas and the television and film industries. The course covers salon makeup, photographic makeup, airbrushing, hair styling and makeup for all aspects of the wedding business.

Special Effects Makeup Programme

For a period of five months the student is expected to learn about special effect makeup for television, film and video productions. The course expands the full range of skills necessary for this type of makeup application and is taught in a specific lab with appropriate equipment and tools.

Artistry of Makeup Programme

This specific programme is taught over a year. It spans all the necessary skills for a proficient makeup professional for the beauty makeup industry as well as for theatre and high fashion genres. It covers salon makeup, makeup for theatrical and live performances, high fashion photographic makeup, beginning prosthetics, television and high definition television makeup and film makeup. This is ideal for the student that wants to dabble in all aspects of the business without any initial specialisation.

Master Classes

These classes are refresher courses that are available to existing makeup artists and graduates of EI. The classes are offered throughout the academic year and are available for a number of specific makeup applications.
