Care, treatments, and makeup for the eye contour area.
Daily care of the eye contour area
The skin surrounding your eyes is much more fragile than that on the rest of your face, so that's why it's important to use a cream formulated specifically for this area. Creams for this area are lighter and penetrate better. I recommend starting to use an eye contour cream at twenty years of age for prevention, and then changing the formula as the years go by.
Starting at thirty, your cream should also treat expression lines. Once you've reached forty, you should also treat the elasticity of your skin and firm up the area. There are also creams specifically for treating not just wrinkles, but bags and undereye circles.
When choosing an eye contour cream, it's important to take your age into account and to be consistent with treatment. Eye contour cream is the first cream that you should use. Always apply it before serum and moisturizing creams. Why? Because if you apply the other creams (which are heavier than eye contour cream) first, the contour cream won't be able to penetrate your skin.
It's important to apply the eye contour cream with soft circular motions. You don't need to use a lot of product. To finish, lightly tap the area to stimulate blood circulation to the area.
If you tend to have bags under your eyes, opt for gel textures and lightly massage the area nightly to stimulate circulation and prevent accumulation of fluids in this part of your face.
Special care
Use a special mask once a week, particularly once you reach thirty years of age, or if you tend to have bags and undereye circles. You can also put cotton balls soaked with tea on your eyes to decongest. The cotton balls shouldn't be hot! Remember to be careful with your eyes - they're very sensitive.
How to cover undereye circles
The best product for "erasing" circles is, of course, concealer. However, it's important to choose a concealer that's suited to your type of circles, or it will only make them more obvious. My advice is to choose a concealer only one shade lighter than your skin tone. If you don't, you can end up with two unflattering white circles around your eyes.
When you apply concealer, apply it exclusively to the darkened area. Finish by blending with your fingertip to avoid accumulation of excess product in the eye contour area, creating expression lines. You can apply concealer either under or over foundation, depending on the type you use. Applying concealer with a synthetic brush will help it last longer.
To lighten up the area, you can use a highlighting concealer, but avoid this if you have bags, because it creates the illusion of volume, which works quite well for reducing undereye circles, but not so much for bags.
How to hide bags
It's harder to hide bags than circles, but you can reduce their appearance. First of all, you should use a contour cream specifically formulated to treat bags, and always massage it in to help drain the area. Gels work very well.
Be careful not to create more volume with your concealer. Apply concealer to the inner corners of your eyes and over circles. Avoid using concealer on bags, where it's better to use foundation or a concealer in the same shade as your skin.
Our favorite products: Treatment
I recently started using Zelens Intensive Triple Action Cream , available at www.perfumeriaq.com , and it's become one of my favorites. However, there's one drawback: the price. But I love it because it treats bags, wrinkles and circles.
I also love the Olay line of wrinkle products and the Regenerist line. These come at a fantastic price; I recommended them to my mom, and now she's a loyal follower :-) .
Another eye contour cream that works well, especially for treating dryness and lack of tone, is the Origins cream from the Dr. Weil line (you know I'm very loyal to his products).
Romina, the marketing director for Elite Make Up and ElitePro , has told us of the wrinkle-smoothing powers of Tri-Aktiline, which is sold exclusively by Sephora. Personally, I plan on giving it a try this weekend.
Our favorite products: Concealers
Another secret weapon for the eye contour area is concealer, but not all concealers are made equal. Here are our favorites:
In my opinion, Secret Concealer by Laura Mercier is the best thing out there. In Spain , it is only available through www.perfumeriaq.com , but I assure you that it's worth the trouble.
Another basic concealer is Select Cover by Mac . This is great to use when you have to cover really dark circles - it really works!
