It’s a fact that we were all born with perfect skin. So what happened? Well, there was puberty, whacky hormones, stress, pollution and sun exposure. Combine this with a poor skin care routine and you have the recipe for less than perfect skin. Don’t sink into despair so there are many ways to recoup the losses and improve the look and feel of your skin.

The key to looking flawless starts with your skin. Healthy glowing skin is the perfect canvas to makeup. Lots of persons shudder when they hear this and relegate themselves to life of enduring imperfect skin. There is no need to be daunted. It is only that it may take quite some effort to get your skin looking its very best.

Fact 1: We are all born with perfect skin. That’s bittersweet because the majority of us think we will never be to attain such perfection again. Ah! But there’s hope: even though it may take some time and effort, it is achievable.

Fact 2: Good healthy skin needs a regimen for upkeep. You can only get away for so long with washing your face with body soap and water. You already know the mantra: cleanse, tone and moisturise, so keep it up.

Fact 3: Using the best makeup does not substitute for a poor skin care routine. Good makeup can only do so much if you’re not taking care of your skin otherwise.

Look for a skin care line that champions taking care of skin naturally and gently. This means it should contain no perfume, no colour additives, no alcohol and no harsh chemicals that can so often wreak havoc on skin. It should also be chock full of vitamins and plant derivatives that revitalise your skin.

Twice daily you should cleanse with a face wash a pea sized amount is enough to get rid of oil, dirt and makeup. After a long day, you can clean your face first with wipes.

Use an alcohol free toner that won’t strip skin of moisture and increase dryness. Squeeze a few drops unto a cotton ball and sweep over face and neck in upward and outward motions.

Your day moisturiser should have at least SPF 15 for complete sun protection. If you can find one that has turmeric in it, all the better, as it is a natural brightener and evens out the skin tone. Is there any wonder why Indian women have been rubbing turmeric into their skin for centuries?

For nightly moisturising, choose a thick cream that was developed for this purpose. Your skin goes through a natural regeneration routine that would benefit from vitamins and firming products so that you wake up to fresher smoother skin.

It’s never too early to use an eye cream or serum especially if you use a lot of eye makeup. Pat (not rub!) this in around the eye area with your ring finger as this is the one that tugs the least on the sensitive eye area.

A cleansing routine does not have to be a chore – it’s a worthwhile habit to cultivate and your skin would love you for it.
