70’s Makeup

Afros weren’t the only big thing in the 1970s. Makeup was used to celebrate a woman’s beauty and the trend was to embrace the natural splendor of the skin. The nude and no-makeup looks were in and the skin was perfected to a flawless finish.

Face

  • The skin should be glowing and smooth. Radiant skin was in fashion at this time and the best way to achieve this effect would be to gently exfoliate the skin after cleansing and before moisturising. Give the moisturiser a few minutes to be absorbed into the skin before moving on to the foundation.
  • To mimic the trend of the 1970s, choose a mineral foundation to give the skin a natural glow. Use a powder foundation unless your skin is dry. Buff this onto the skin in swirling motions with a dense kabuki brush for an airbrushed finish.
  • Tanned faces were in at this time too. Use a matte bronzer and dust lightly around the edges of the face, at the temples, under the cheekbones and along the sides of the nose. This would also help to contour the face as well as add natural warmth to the skin tone.
  • The cheeks would do well with a rosy peach blush lightly applied to the centres blending into the bronzer. For an even more natural appearance, apply a cream blush to the apples of the cheeks before putting on the powder foundation.
  • Eyes

  • The eyebrows were naturally shaped and full without being overdone. If you need to fill in any gaps in your own brows, do so with light feathery strokes of a brow pencil. Fix the brows with a brow gel or clear mascara, combing upwards and to the sides.
  • On the eyelids sweep a shimmery pale green eyeshadow from lash line to brow.
  • On the upper lash line only, apply a thin line of black liquid eyeliner along the length of the eyes.
  • The eyelashes were spiky and black. Apply two coats of mascara from the middle of the eyelashes to the ends to get the spikes that were in. Don’t forget to do the lower lashes as well.
  • Lips

  • Outline the lips in a natural or rose pink lip pencil, keeping just inside the natural lip line. Fill in the lips with a pearlescent pink lipstick.
  • In the centre of the bottom lip only apply a lighter frosty colour for a natural pout.
  • With such a fresh faced and youthful look, you can face the world with a confidence sourced from a natural radiance.
