1920’s Makeup

The roaring twenties was an era when women embraced a time of expressionism and the flapper woman reigned in a post war world. This was epitomised by dark fashion: dark hair, dark makeup, dark clothes were all the rage.

The makeup of this time was quite distinct. Here is a brief outline of the makeup look and how it was applied and how the look can be duplicated.

Face

  • The skin of the face was pale, as cream and ivory face powder were the current products in that decade. To replicate this look, choose a foundation that is one shade lighter than your natural skin tone and blend well so that the face does not look ashy or chalky. Cover the lips as well as the lip shape would be altered later on. Set the foundation with a translucent powder.
  • Cheeks were painted a rose colour just at the centre in a circular fashion. Blend the edges slightly but avoid extending the colour outwards and backwards.
  • Eyes

  • The eye colours were very dark. The main colours used were black, brown and grey. With a creamy black pencil, line the entire length of the upper lash line and blend upwards onto halfway of the mobile eyelid.
  • Blend a dark grey shadow over the softened eyeliner but do not go past the crease. The edges of the shadow should be softened and this can be done effectively with a blending brush.
  • Line the lower waterline as well with the black eyeliner. Smudge this onto the outer lower lash line too with a dense smudge brush or with gentle taps of a finger.
  • Both the lower and upper lashes were darkened to intensify the look. To do this, apply two coats of black mascara to the lashes.
  • The eyebrows were thin and black with a rounded shape and a downward slope. Use a black powder to fix the brows into this shape.
  • Lips

  • Lips were drawn with an emphasised cupid’s bow and with more of a heart shape. This means that the width of the lips was decreased and the pout of the lower lip was slightly exaggerated. With a garnet or brown lip liner, line the lips with a sharp centre peak and pouty lower lip by lining outside the natural lip line in these areas. For the sides of the lips, line inside the natural lip line so that the shape there is visually smaller. Fill in the lips with a matte or semi-matte lipstick in a reddish brown colour.

The flapper look was finished off with a headdress adorned with black beads and feathers to one side.
